Refusées by Massin
Massin is a manifold artist, a poster-maker, journalist, publisher and a graphic designer who has designed thousands of book covers. In this new publication by LWA Éditions, the charismatic art director of Gallimard's publishing house presents book covers turned down by 'malicious publishers'. In the book Massin explains the graphic and typographical choices he made and discloses the many hidden reasons behind a publisher's refusal to release a specific cover (trends of the time, an over-cautious attitude, an obligation to abide by sacrosanct marketing policies, a desire for conformity, a volatile author, etc.) Throughout this beautifully crafted publication, a previously unsuspected history of book publishing is revealed – this time with a touch of scandal. French award-winning graphic artist and poster-maker Savignac used to say that an effective book cover, like an effective poster, is nothing but a visual scandal ; Massin's lifelong body of work tells us that he clearly identified with Savignac's vision.
