Clémenceau, The Tiger and Asia

The Musée Guimet is holding an exhibition dedicated to the close links that Georges Clémenceau developed with Asia. As well as being a prominent political figure, Clémenceau grew a genuine passion for Asia, its civilisations and its religions. This unknown side of Père la Victoire's personality is revealed in the promotional trailer ; over a deep blue background, archive footage shows Clémenceau in his study, surrounded by his collection of artefacts, or alongside Claude Monet, admiring a buddha in the temple of Gal Vihara. Added written comments underline the aesthetic and philosophical quest of a man who was, already in his days, regarded as a 'museum-maker'. Incense cases, fine prints, delicate statues : a number of stunning objects elegantly framed in white have been brought together for the event. The film, just like the exhibition, follows Clémenceau on his 1920 journey through Asia. The exraordinary trip would eventually turn into a genuine dialogue between two worlds, between this Frenchman and the civilisations he discovered. The atmosphere of mystery prevailing in the short film gives us a glimpse of the complexity of 'the Tiger''s personality – one he would eventually let go of  to open himself to men in an attempt to better understand the meaning of the Eastern world. A number of people in charge of this remarkable cultural event are also interviewed in the teaser, each revealing an aspect of the great man's personality and attesting to his deep love of Asia.
