Le Salon international du livre ancien, organisé par le Syndicat National de la Librairie Ancienne et Moderne, est l'une plus grande manifestation au monde consacré au patrimoine écrit. Le film présentant l’édition 2011 donne la parole à de grands noms de la vie culturelle comme le prix Nobel Gao Xingjian, visitant ce haut lieu de la bibliophilie. Des libraires évoquent, avec enthousiasme et émotion, quelques trésors qu’ils ont « chassés » dans l’année. Ces passeurs disent leur amour pour ces traces, anciennes et actuelles, laissées par l’esprit humain. Le rythme des plans reflète le dynamisme de la manifestation qui accueille non seulement des spécialistes mais aussi un public très élargi. La programmation propose un véritable fourmillement d’animations, que des séquences mettent bien en valeur : lectures, impressions d’estampe, conférences, concerts, remise du prix de bibliographie, expositions autour de la bibliothèque Jacques Doucet et du politiquement correct… La caméra parcourt les rayons de cette immense librairie et s’arrête sur nombre de documents afin de présenter la prodigieuse diversité des ouvrages rassemblés sous la somptueuse verrière.
The International Antiquarian Book Fair organised by Le Syndicat national de la Librairie Ancienne et Moderne is the largest exhibition in the world dedicated to books. The film features a number of prominent cultural figures such as Nobel Prize winner and visitor of the event Gao Xingjian. Enthusiastic booksellers tell us the story of some of the treasures they have 'hunted down' over the past twelve months, and with us they share their passion for those ancient and modern traces of humanity. The flowing movements of the camera suggest the lively atmosphere of the event, attended by both specialists and members of the public. The programme of the Salon abounds with activities, as shown in the sequences of the film : public readings, live engraving sessions, conferences, concerts, a ceremony for the Bibliography Award, a specific display devoted to Jaques Doucet's library on the notion of politically correct... Roaming through the aisles of the gigantic 'gallery-bookshop', the camera lingers at times to show us a number of documents reflecting the great diversity of exhibits on show beneath the glass roof. Our eyes can then rest for a moment on the treasures displayed by 2012 guest of honor Library of the Paris Bar.
