La Réunion des Musées Nationaux ― Grand Palais a organisé en 2012 la première rétrospective européenne d’envergure consacrée à Edward Hopper. La bande-annonce de l’exposition plonge le spectateur dans une ambiance de polar. Plans de quelques secondes sur Nighthawks… Les quatre personnages du célèbre tableau trompent leur ennui en se remémorant le passé. Les scènes qu’ils ressassent sont, elles-mêmes, des toiles du peintre américain. Ces flashs racontent des histoires de solitude qui reflètent la complexité de son univers. À l’image du succès triomphal de l’événement, le court a connu un record de visionnage.
In 2012, the Réunion des Musées Nationaux ― Grand Palais organised the first European retrospective dedicated to Edward Hopper. An atmosphere of crime fiction prevails in the trailer introducing Nighthawks, the famous paintingin which four people appear lost in their own thoughts, seemingly recalling past experiences in an attempt to overcome boredom. The scenes they conjure up might well be those very same scenes the American artist depicted throughout his life. Each flashback seems to be telling a story of loneliness, typical of Hopper's complex body of work. The exhibition was tremendously successful ; likewise, the short film has registered a record number of viewings.
